Bentley is poised to revive its Supersports nameplate next week with a limited-edition Continental GT model focused on delivering a thrilling, rear-wheel-drive performance. The unveiling will take place early Friday morning in New York, marking a return to the brand’s sporting heritage.
A Legacy of Performance
The Supersports name carries a history of high performance within Bentley’s lineup. The last iteration appeared in 2017, offering a range-topping version of the previous-generation Continental GT equipped with a powerful 6.0-litre W12 engine generating 700 horsepower. This new model promises to continue that tradition, albeit with a distinct shift in powertrain philosophy.
A Focus on Raw Power and Lightweight Design
The latest Continental Supersports model is being positioned as a “pure-performance” offering, demonstrating Bentley’s unique ability to blend luxury and raw speed. Here’s why this matters: Bentley is highlighting a rare combination in the high-end automotive world – a car that delivers both exceptional comfort and exhilarating performance.
To achieve this focus, Bentley has opted for a rear-wheel-drive configuration and significantly revised the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. While the W12 powertrain of the previous Supersports model has been retired, and the electric motor from the GT Speed’s plug-in hybrid system is absent, the boosted V8 will deliver around 640 horsepower. This represents a substantial increase from the GT Speed’s standard 592 horsepower. Further enhancing performance, Bentley will utilize extensive lightweighting measures.
Design and Positioning
While spy photos previously revealed a prominent rear spoiler and quad exhaust tips hinting at the car’s sporty nature, the production version is expected to feature an even more striking makeover drawing from the recently updated Continental GT design.
The new Continental Supersports will be the first example of Bentley’s plans for “more extreme” models that reinforce the brand’s sporting heritage and credentials.
The retirement of the W12 engine means the new Supersports won’t match the peak power of its predecessor or even the top-spec Continental GT Speed. However, its focus on lightweight construction and rear-wheel-drive handling should make it a compelling option for drivers seeking a more engaging driving experience. This shift is significant because it acknowledges a growing demand among enthusiasts for traditional, uncompromised performance.
