Mercedes-AMG is poised to deliver an exceptionally powerful version of its GLC SUV, potentially exceeding 900 horsepower, according to industry sources. This development signals a commitment to high-performance electric vehicles, even as some automakers reassess their electrification timelines.
Electric Architecture and Triple-Motor Setup
The upcoming AMG GLC will leverage the dedicated AMG Electric Architecture (AMG.EA), previewed earlier this year with the 1,340-horsepower GT XX Concept. The SUV will employ a three-motor setup: one axial-flux motor at the front and two in the rear, collectively generating over 900 hp. This configuration is designed to deliver blistering acceleration, with a targeted 0-62 mph sprint time under three seconds.
Advanced Battery Technology
Key to achieving this performance is an advanced battery system. Unlike many EV designs that use prismatic cells, the AMG GLC will utilize cylindrical cells. These cells will benefit from direct cooling, where coolant flows directly around each cylinder, ensuring sustained high-power output. This cooling method is critical for maintaining performance during aggressive driving.
Performance Positioning
The high-performance GLC will directly compete with vehicles like the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, aiming to match or exceed its power and capabilities. Mercedes-AMG is positioning the GLC as a flagship electric SUV, showcasing its commitment to both luxury and extreme performance.
Simulated Driving Experience
To replicate the feel of a combustion engine, the AMG GLC will incorporate features such as simulated gearshifts and artificial engine sounds. This approach, known as skeuomorphism, aims to bridge the gap between traditional driving experiences and the silent nature of electric vehicles.
Design and Interior Upgrades
Beyond performance, the AMG GLC will receive distinct visual upgrades, including unique bodywork, active aerodynamics, and AMG-specific interior touches. The cabin will feature sport seats and other performance-oriented enhancements.
Future Plans
Mercedes-AMG is preparing to launch several high-performance electric vehicles in the coming years. The GT XX Concept, which previews a 1,000+ horsepower sedan, will be followed by the AMG GLC, solidifying the brand’s commitment to electric performance.
The AMG GLC represents a significant step in the evolution of high-performance electric SUVs, combining cutting-edge technology with a driving experience designed to satisfy enthusiasts
