Genesis GV60 Magma: The Performance Reboot Luxury Needs

25

Genesis has unveiled the production version of the GV60 Magma, a high-performance electric SUV poised to become the brand’s most pivotal model yet. Revealed at Circuit Paul Ricard in France, the GV60 Magma marks the debut of Genesis’ new performance sub-brand, promising a blend of luxury and track-ready capabilities.

The Ioniq 5 N Connection

Underneath the aggressive styling and vibrant orange exterior, the GV60 Magma is fundamentally based on the acclaimed Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. This isn’t a compromise; it’s a deliberate engineering decision to leverage proven performance technology within a more premium package.

The Magma boasts key performance upgrades:

  • Lowered Ride Height: 15mm lower than the standard GV60.
  • Wider Track: Expanded by 15-20mm front and rear.
  • Aggressive Tires: 21-inch forged wheels fitted with 275/35R21 Pirelli P Zero tires.

Numbers That Matter

The GV60 Magma shares the Ioniq 5 N’s 84kWh battery and dual-motor powertrain, delivering impressive specifications:

  • Power: 478kW (643 hp) in Boost Mode
  • Torque: 770Nm (568 lb-ft) in Boost Mode
  • 0-100km/h: 3.4 seconds
  • Top Speed: 260km/h (162 mph)

These figures represent a significant leap over the standard GV60 Performance’s 4.0-second sprint, confirming the Magma’s track-focused intent.

Track-Ready Features

The GV60 Magma incorporates software features borrowed from the Ioniq 5 N:

  • Virtual Gear Shift (VGS): Simulates an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission using paddle shifters, complete with a dedicated RPM display.
  • High Performance Brake Control (HPBC): Optimizes regenerative and friction braking for consistent pedal feel during aggressive driving.
  • Drift Mode: Allows for rear-wheel-drive torque delivery for controlled oversteer.

Luxury Refinement

Despite its performance focus, Genesis emphasizes the GV60 Magma as a “GT” vehicle designed for daily usability. The cabin features:

  • Bucket Seats: Nappa leather and suede upholstery with Magma Orange stitching.
  • Premium Materials: Retained crystal sphere gear selector and high-end finishes.

This creates a unique blend of track capability and luxury comfort, making it a compelling all-rounder.

Why This Matters for Genesis

The GV60 Magma is a critical launch for Genesis, as current GV60 sales are struggling. Sales have dropped by 77% in the first half of 2025, making it the brand’s worst-performing model. The Magma sub-brand is intended to reboot interest, competing directly with performance divisions from BMW (M) and Mercedes-AMG.

If the GV60 Magma can successfully combine Ioniq 5 N-level performance with genuine luxury refinement, it could be the turning point Genesis needs to revitalize its EV sales and establish itself as a serious player in the high-performance segment.
