Kia is preparing to unveil the next-generation Seltos subcompact SUV on December 10th, and early previews confirm a significant overhaul. The Seltos, which sits below the Sportage in Kia’s lineup, is set to grow in size, adopt a bolder design language, and introduce hybrid powertrain options for the first time.
Design Evolution: Rugged Meets Refined
The redesigned Seltos embraces Kia’s “Opposites United” design philosophy, blending the rugged aesthetic of traditional SUVs with the sleek aerodynamics of modern electric vehicles. Teaser images reveal sharper body lines, a boxier stance, and distinctive vertical LED headlights framing a wider grille. The vehicle’s profile echoes the all-electric Kia EV5, featuring a rising beltline, a floating roofline, and flush door handles.
This design shift is crucial because the subcompact SUV market is intensely competitive. Automakers must continuously refresh models to stay relevant, and the Seltos redesign appears aimed at capturing attention with a more modern and assertive look.
Size and Practicality: Roomier Inside
While Kia hasn’t released exact dimensions, the new Seltos appears slightly larger than the outgoing model (currently 4,365 mm long). This increase in size should translate to a more spacious cabin and enhanced practicality, addressing a common criticism of the first-generation Seltos.
The growing demand for compact SUVs with ample interior space makes this a smart move. Buyers in this segment often prioritize versatility, and a roomier Seltos could attract families or individuals needing extra cargo capacity.
Powertrain Options: Hybrid Power Arrives
The new Seltos will offer both gasoline and hybrid powertrains, potentially including an e-AWD (electronic all-wheel drive) configuration. Expect an updated turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine alongside a self-charging hybrid system shared with the Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro.
The inclusion of a hybrid option is significant. With tightening emissions standards and rising fuel costs, consumers are increasingly seeking fuel-efficient vehicles. A hybrid Seltos would position Kia to capture a larger share of the market as demand for electrified models grows.
The updated Seltos will also come in X-Line (rugged) and GT-Line (sporty) variants, each featuring subtle styling differences. The redesigned SUV is poised to be a key player in the competitive subcompact segment, offering a blend of modern design, improved practicality, and electrified powertrain options.
