Kia is effectively discontinuing the Niro small crossover in Australia, with remaining EV stock dwindling rapidly and the hybrid model slated for replacement by the next-generation Seltos. The decision comes as sales of the Niro have significantly underperformed in the local market, failing to compete on price or volume with rivals like the Hyundai Kona.
EV Production Ceased, Hybrid Future Uncertain
According to Kia Australia’s general manager for product, Roland Rivero, production of the Niro EV for Australia ended “months ago.” While Kia hasn’t officially announced the model’s axing, the writing is on the wall. The EV version has been superseded by the newer, more affordable EV3, which enters at a similar price point but offers comparable range and features.
The Niro Hybrid’s fate is also sealed. It will likely be replaced by a hybrid variant of the upcoming Seltos, due in late 2026. The new Seltos will share the same platform (‘K3’) as the Niro and Kona, suggesting a direct swap in the lineup.
Sales Figures Tell the Story
The Niro’s poor sales performance is a key factor in this move. In 2024, only 1,455 units were registered, a drop from 1,826 in 2023. Year-to-date figures through November 30, 2025, show just 375 Niro deliveries, down 73.1%. This contrasts sharply with the Hyundai Kona, which has sold over 21,000 units in the same period—a 28% increase year-over-year.
Pricing has been a significant barrier. The Niro Hybrid starts at $45,000 plus on-roads, while the base EV costs $66,590. The Kona Hybrid, starting at $36,950, offers more value for money and has become a top seller.
Global vs. Local Market Differences
The Niro remains popular in markets like South Korea and Europe, but Australia presents a different scenario. The EV3 has already taken the Niro EV’s place in the local lineup, with the entry-level version priced competitively at $47,600. It nearly matches the Niro EV’s range (436km vs 460km) and offers superior value.
The Niro Hybrid’s replacement, the next-generation Seltos, will arrive in late 2026. Kia is expected to reveal more details about the new Seltos on December 10, confirming the inclusion of a hybrid powertrain.
This move highlights how automakers adapt their lineups to regional market demands. The Niro struggled to gain traction in Australia due to pricing and competition, while the EV3 and future Seltos Hybrid offer more competitive alternatives.
