Skoda is preparing to launch its largest and most expensive electric vehicle yet: the Peaq. This seven-seat SUV will be positioned as the brand’s premium offering, rivaling models like the Peugeot e-5008 and Mercedes-Benz GLB while remaining more affordable than competitors such as the Kia EV9.
Expanding into New Territory
The Peaq represents a strategic move for Skoda, signaling an intention to compete in the higher end of the electric SUV market. The vehicle is based on the 2022 Vision 7S concept and will utilize Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform – the same architecture underpinning the Enyaq and Elroq.
According to Skoda’s sales and marketing boss, Martin Jahn, the Peaq is a deliberate effort to elevate the brand. “With the Vision 7S, we entered new territory for Skoda… Now we are bringing this innovative vehicle concept to life,” Jahn stated. The SUV’s design will closely follow the “Modern Solid” aesthetic previously showcased in the concept.
Positioning and Pricing
While Skoda has not yet revealed precise pricing, the Peaq is expected to exceed the starting price of the five-seat Enyaq, which begins at just under £40,000. However, it will likely remain cheaper than more premium seven-seat EVs like the Kia EV9, Hyundai Ioniq 9, and Volvo EX90.
Significance in the Market
The move into the seven-seat EV segment is notable because it addresses a relatively underserved market. Few manufacturers currently offer electric vehicles with this capacity, making the Peaq a potentially significant product for Skoda.
“There are not too many seven-seaters in the BEV arena, so we believe it will be a really important car: beautiful from the outside, very practical from the inside,” Jahn previously told Autocar.
The Peaq’s debut is scheduled for this summer, with sales expected to begin by the end of the year. This launch marks Skoda’s commitment to expanding its electric portfolio and strengthening its brand identity through a bolder, more premium product offering.
