Volvo EX60: New Electric Crossover Aims to Revive EV Sales

The 2027 Volvo EX60 is the company’s latest attempt to recapture momentum in the electric vehicle (EV) market. After a 13% drop in EV demand in 2025, Volvo is banking on this crossover’s long range, fast charging, and Tesla-compatible charging port to turn things around. The EX60 represents a critical move for the Geely-owned brand, as it fully embraces dedicated EV architecture.

Long Range and Performance Options

The EX60 offers three battery sizes – 80 kWh, 91 kWh, and 112 kWh – with the largest providing up to 400 miles of range on a single charge. The model comes in single-motor (rear-wheel drive) and dual-motor (all-wheel drive) configurations, with power outputs ranging from 369 hp to a substantial 670 hp in the top-tier trim.

Acceleration times vary accordingly:

  • P6 (RWD): 0-62 mph in 5.7 seconds.
  • P10 AWD: 0-62 mph in 4.4 seconds.
  • P12 AWD: 0-62 mph in 3.8 seconds.

Charging speeds are also competitive, with the flagship version capable of adding 173 miles of range in just 10 minutes at peak 400 kW charging stations. Notably, the EX60 includes a native North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, granting access to Tesla’s Supercharger network without adapters.

Styling and Design

The EX60’s exterior features a streamlined design reminiscent of the larger EX90, though with unique touches like integrated winglets in place of traditional door handles. These contribute to a low drag coefficient of 0.26, aiding efficiency. The available Cross Country variant stands out with raised suspension (up to 1.6 inches of lift), stainless steel skid plates, and a rugged aesthetic.

Inside, the cabin is minimalist, with most functions accessed via a lag-free infotainment system powered by Google’s Gemini AI assistant. Volvo has also integrated a 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system with speakers embedded in the headrests. The absence of a transmission tunnel creates a flat floor, maximizing interior space.

Tech and Manufacturing

Volvo has implemented mega casting – replacing hundreds of smaller components with large recycled aluminum castings – to reduce weight and improve structural integrity. The vehicle also utilizes in-house-developed electric motors and cell-to-body battery technology, further enhancing efficiency.

The EX60 is manufactured in Sweden, with European orders already open. U.S. deliveries are slated for late spring, starting with the P6 and P10 AWD models, followed by the P12 AWD and Cross Country in 2027.

The Bigger Picture

Volvo’s move to dedicated EV platforms with the EX60 is a direct response to the challenges of retrofitting combustion engine architectures. The company’s EV sales slump in 2025 underscores the urgency of this transition. Whether the EX60 can succeed depends on competitive pricing and the ability to avoid the software glitches that plagued the EX90’s launch. As competition intensifies with models like the BMW iX3 and Mercedes GLC with EQ Technology, Volvo will need to deliver a reliable, high-performing EV to reclaim its position in the market.
