Mercedes-AMG is reviving high-performance V8 power in a new, aggressive variant of the CLE coupe. This model, part of the exclusive Mythos series, signals a shift away from the brand’s reliance on six-cylinder engines and could be the redemption for enthusiasts mourning the loss of the V8 C63.
Aggressive Styling and Performance Cues
Teaser images reveal a heavily modified CLE with a significantly more aggressive front end. A massive lower intake, reminiscent of Porsche’s 911 aero designs, dominates the front bumper, hinting at serious cooling needs. The rear receives even more attention with a motorsport-style wing replacing the standard model’s subtle lip spoiler and square exhaust pipes—a traditional AMG signifier of V8 power.
The Return of the Flat-Plane Crank V8
This new CLE will be the first high-performance vehicle to feature Mercedes-AMG’s next-generation flat-plane crank 4.0-liter V8 engine. The engine is expected to produce over 650 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. The S-class will be the first model to debut the engine on January 29. The CLE Mythos is expected to exceed the S-class’s output, making it the most powerful variant of the new engine family.
Track-Focused Setup
Prototype shots show a roll cage in the rear compartment, likely for driver safety during testing, but also hinting at a track-focused setup. The vehicle was caught oversteering on a frozen lake, with rear-wheel drive engagement suggesting a potentially rear-wheel drive powertrain.
Exclusivity and Pricing
As part of the Mythos program, production will be extremely limited, with pricing expected to be substantial. The first Mythos model, the SL PureSpeed, was capped at 250 units and sold for around $1 million. This CLE Mythos will likely follow a similar strategy, prioritizing exclusivity over volume.
Mercedes-AMG’s move to bring back the V8 in a more focused package like the CLE Mythos demonstrates a commitment to high-performance enthusiasts and a willingness to push the boundaries of what an AMG coupe can deliver. The limited production run will ensure that this vehicle remains a collector’s item for years to come.
