GM Confirms Next-Gen Silverado & Sierra: Design Leaked, V8 Engine Updates Planned

13

General Motors (GM) has officially announced the upcoming reveal of redesigned Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks this year. This confirmation, made during their Q4 earnings report, ends speculation and provides a timeline for a major update to two of America’s best-selling vehicles.

Silverado’s Long-Awaited Redesign

The Chevrolet Silverado is a sales juggernaut, with over 560,000 units sold in 2023—including 358,771 Silverado 1500s. However, the current generation, introduced in 2019, hasn’t received substantial changes since 2022, making a refresh overdue.

Spy photos and now, a recently unearthed U.S. Design Patent confirm the 2027 Silverado 1500 is undergoing a full redesign led by veteran Chevrolet designer Tyler Moffett, known for his work on numerous GM trucks and SUVs. The patent reveals a striking new front fascia, mirroring the design language of the Traverse SUV: split lighting units, a mesh grille with a prominent horizontal bar, and a rugged bumper housing a noticeable sensor and an air dam for improved fuel efficiency.

The bodywork is streamlined, with stylized front fenders and an angular accent above the rear wheels. At the rear, the truck features a cab-mounted spoiler, a sliding rear window, and a tailgate sporting the iconic Chevrolet bowtie emblem instead of lettering. Taillights bear a resemblance to those found on the Ford F-150 Lightning. The Multi-Flex tailgate design—offering six functional configurations—is expected to be updated further.

V8 Engine Investment Signals Future Performance

GM is investing $900 million in a new generation of V8 engines. While details remain scarce, the company promises stronger performance, improved fuel efficiency, and reduced emissions. These engines will replace the current 5.3-liter (355 hp, 383 lb-ft) and 6.2-liter (420 hp, 460 lb-ft) V8s. GM also hints at “new combustion and thermal management innovations” driving these improvements.

The engine lineup may also include the existing turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder and 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-six, potentially receiving performance or efficiency updates alongside the new V8s.

Why This Matters

The Silverado and Sierra are critical to GM’s profitability, and these updates are crucial for maintaining market share in the highly competitive full-size truck segment. The redesign addresses consumer demand for a more modern look while the V8 investment underscores GM’s commitment to internal combustion engine technology alongside its EV push. The long-awaited redesign is finally here.
