The Geely EX2, China’s best-selling car last year, is poised to launch in the UK market this summer, priced around £20,000. This all-electric hatchback enters a competitive segment, challenging established rivals like the Renault 5 and MG4 Urban while offering a compelling value proposition.
Competitive Pricing in a Growing Market
While currently priced at roughly £7,000 in China, the UK version of the EX2 is expected to start at approximately £20,000. This places it strategically against competitors such as the Renault 5 (starting at £21,500) and the MG4 Urban (£23,500). Upcoming models like the Volkswagen ID. Polo and Kia EV2 are also slated for release later this year, with estimated prices around £22,000 and £25,000 respectively. The EX2’s pricing undercuts the BYD Dolphin, which begins at over £30,000.
The significance: The influx of affordable EVs from Chinese manufacturers is reshaping the European market, forcing established brands to respond with competitive pricing or risk losing market share.
Interior and Space: Surprising Quality for the Price
Despite its low cost, the EX2 boasts a surprisingly modern interior. Geely’s factory in Linhai, China, produces a cabin with smart design elements, including an illuminated skyline aesthetic on the dashboard and doors. Physical buttons are retained for key functions, a welcome feature in an era of minimalist interiors.
The EX2 features a 14.6-inch central touchscreen and an 8.8-inch driver display, both offering sharp visuals and responsive menus. The vehicle’s dimensions, slightly larger than the Renault 5 at 4.1 meters, translate into enhanced passenger space, particularly in the rear, with a flat floor maximizing comfort. The 375-liter boot capacity is also superior to the Renault 5’s and even exceeds the BYD Dolphin’s 345 liters, with an additional 75 liters of storage under the bonnet.
Range and Battery Options
In China, the EX2 is available with two battery options: a 30kWh unit paired with a 78bhp motor for up to 193 miles of range, and a 40kWh version with a 114bhp motor offering up to 255 miles. However, these figures are based on the Chinese CLTC test cycle, which generally overestimates range compared to European WLTP standards.
Estimated European Range: The EX2 is expected to deliver between 150 and 200 miles of real-world range in the UK, aligning with similar vehicles in its class. Geely may opt to fit larger batteries to remain competitive, potentially matching the 250-mile range of the Renault 5 or the 265-mile range of the BYD Dolphin.
Geely’s Expansion Plans
The EX2 is just one of at least seven Geely models planned for the UK market by 2028. The EX5 electric SUV was the brand’s first offering, followed by the Starray plug-in hybrid SUV. Future releases include a seven-seat SUV designed to compete with the Skoda Kodiaq, and a rugged 4×4 aiming for the Land Rover Defender segment.
The Geely EX2 represents a significant shift in the electric vehicle landscape, offering a compelling combination of affordability and practicality. As Chinese automakers continue to expand their presence in Europe, consumers can expect increased competition and lower prices in the EV market.
