BYD Atto 3 Evo: Major Upgrade to Performance and Range

The BYD Atto 3, a popular electric crossover, has received a substantial overhaul with the launch of the new Atto 3 Evo model. The key changes include a switch to rear-wheel drive, a larger battery pack, and significantly increased power output. These modifications result in a notable boost to performance, range, and overall usability.

Enhanced Performance and Range

The most significant update is the shift from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive. This change is coupled with a larger 74.8kWh battery pack, replacing the previous 60.5kWh unit. The result is an improved WLTP range of 317 miles, up from the original Atto 3’s 260 miles.

The new motor configuration delivers 308bhp and 280lb ft of torque, slashing the 0-62mph time to 5.5 seconds, down from 7.3 seconds. A high-performance dual-motor, four-wheel-drive variant is also available, producing a combined 443bhp and 413lb ft, launching the car from 0-62mph in just 3.9 seconds. While the AWD version has a slightly reduced range of 292 miles, the acceleration gain is considerable.

Faster Charging and Improved Efficiency

BYD has upgraded the Atto 3 Evo’s electrical architecture from 400V to 800V, enabling a peak charging rate of 220kW. This improvement reduces charging times significantly: 10-80% charge now takes approximately 25 minutes, down from the previous 29 minutes. The new battery pack can also output up to 3kW for powering external devices.

Practical Improvements and Refinements

The shift to rear-wheel drive allowed for a redesigned multi-link suspension with five links (up from four), resulting in improved handling. This change also freed up 50 liters of space in the boot, increasing total capacity to 490 liters. A front trunk (“frunk”) has been added, providing an additional 101 liters of storage.

Inside, the gear selector has been relocated to a steering column-mounted stalk, and the digital instrument panel (8.8in) and infotainment touchscreen (15.6in) have received software updates.

The BYD Atto 3 Evo represents a substantial upgrade over its predecessor, delivering improved performance, range, and practicality. The changes position it as a more competitive EV offering in a rapidly evolving market.
