BYD has significantly enhanced the capabilities of its Han L plug-in hybrid sedan through a fourth over-the-air (OTA) software update. The update introduces extended electric range, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and a suite of new features designed to improve the driving experience and vehicle intelligence. This move underscores BYD’s commitment to continuous improvement through software, a strategy that is becoming increasingly common in the competitive EV market.
Enhanced Electric Range for Increased Efficiency
The most notable upgrade is the “Long Range” function, which adds up to 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) of pure electric range to front-wheel drive (FWD) Han L DM models under CLTC testing standards. This brings the total EV range to 225 kilometers (140 miles), allowing for more frequent short trips without engaging the internal combustion engine. All-wheel drive (AWD) versions see a 15-kilometer (9.3 miles) boost, reaching a maximum of 195 kilometers (121 miles) on electric power alone.
The Han L DM is equipped with a 29.46 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which provides sufficient energy for extended EV operation.
DiPilot 5.0: Next-Level Driver Assistance
The update also integrates BYD’s DiPilot 5.0 assisted driving system, powered by an end-to-end large model based on reinforcement learning. This includes advanced parking features such as the ability to switch parking directions mid-maneuver and an emergency parking function that automatically pulls over and stops the vehicle if the driver becomes unresponsive. These features highlight the increasing sophistication of automotive ADAS systems.
Expanded Connectivity and Convenience Features
Beyond range and ADAS, the update adds interconnectivity with Midea smart home appliances, seamless integration with Huawei (Harmony OS 6.0) and Samsung/Oppo smartphones via HiCar, and minor improvements like a head-up display customization, memory functions, in-car gaming, and new lock sound effects.
Han L Specifications and Performance
The BYD Han L is a large sedan with dimensions of 5050 x 1960 x 1505 mm and a 2,970 mm wheelbase. The interior features a 15.6-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch LCD instrument cluster, and a stalk-mounted gear shifter. The all-electric variant boasts impressive performance: the RWD version delivers 500 kW (671 hp) with a 5.5-second 0-100 km/h acceleration time and a CLTC range of 701 km (435 miles). The AWD version increases power to 1,086 hp, accelerating to 100 km/h in just 2.7 seconds, while offering a CLTC range of 601 km (373 miles) from its 83.21 kWh battery. The PHEV version combines a 1.5-liter engine with electric motors, delivering up to 400 kW (536 hp) in AWD configuration and a 3.9-second 0-100 km/h sprint.
The BYD Han L’s latest OTA update demonstrates how software-driven enhancements can significantly improve vehicle performance and functionality. By prioritizing over-the-air updates, BYD is positioning itself to adapt quickly to changing consumer preferences and technological advancements in the rapidly evolving EV market.
