BYD is poised to expand its Seal lineup in Australia with the upcoming release of the Seal 6 Touring – a plug-in hybrid wagon. Unlike the fully electric Seal sedan, the Touring variant utilizes a hybrid powertrain, combining a 1.5-liter petrol engine with an electric motor, similar to BYD’s Shark ute.
Hybrid Power and Performance
The Seal 6 will be available in both sedan and wagon configurations. The UK market offers two performance tiers: the Essential model produces 135kW combined with 300Nm of torque, while the Premium version delivers 156kW alongside the same torque figure. The Premium trim also features a larger 19kWh battery, providing up to 105km of all-electric range, compared to the Essential’s 55km range from its smaller 10.08kWh battery. Other battery options exist internationally, though Australian specifications will likely mirror those offered in the UK.
Market Impact and Competition
The Seal 6 Touring has the potential to disrupt the mid-size market, particularly targeting fleet buyers like taxi and ride-share operators due to its fuel efficiency and increased cargo space in the wagon body. The wagon variant is only 10mm taller than the standard sedan (4840mm long, 1875mm wide, and 1495mm tall with a 2790mm wheelbase).
BYD’s aggressive pricing strategy suggests the Seal 6 Touring could undercut current plug-in hybrid wagon competitors, such as the Skoda Superb PHEV which retails at $66,990 drive-away.
BYD’s Sales Ambitions
BYD Australia has explicitly stated its intention to secure a top-three position in the Australian sales charts by 2026. According to CEO Stephen Collins, the company’s ambition is to “definitely be close to the top three” and continue improving beyond that. This expansion with the Seal 6 Touring is a key step toward realizing that goal.
The BYD Seal 6 Touring represents a strategic move to offer a more versatile and potentially more affordable plug-in hybrid option, strengthening BYD’s presence in the competitive Australian automotive market.
