Subaru’s high-performance STI division is not being discontinued, according to Scott Lawrence, Subaru Australia’s general manager, in a recent statement to Drive.com. This confirmation follows months of speculation about the future of the iconic brand, particularly after Subaru initially decided against a full-fledged STI variant for the current WRX generation.
Fan Feedback Drives Development
Lawrence emphasized that Subaru has been closely monitoring public response to recent STI-branded concept models, including the Performance-B and Performance-E unveiled at the Tokyo auto show. The automaker acknowledges the significant volume of feedback from enthusiasts, suggesting that consumer demand is influencing future decisions.
“The tempo of news and activity out of STI publicly is picking up,” Lawrence stated, indicating a renewed focus on the performance division.
Gas-Powered Concept Stays a Concept; EV Remains Possible
Subaru has confirmed that the Performance-B concept, featuring a traditional internal-combustion engine, will remain strictly a concept vehicle. However, the door remains open for a production version of the Performance-E electric concept. This suggests that Subaru is seriously considering an electric STI model, despite initial hesitation from some fans over abandoning the brand’s signature boxer engine.
The Shift to Electric Performance
Subaru’s decision to explore electric powertrains aligns with a broader industry trend toward electrification. The automaker’s Solterra EV, currently its quickest model (0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds), demonstrates its capability in the electric performance segment. While some die-hard fans may resist the change, an electric STI could offer comparable or even superior performance.
The continued existence of the STI brand is now directly tied to evolving market demands and Subaru’s willingness to adapt. This move underscores the importance of fan engagement in shaping the future of automotive performance divisions.
