BYD has unveiled its latest electric SUV, the Great Tang, positioning it as a direct competitor to established luxury brands like Volvo and Hyundai. While the name might seem unfamiliar, the vehicle boasts cutting-edge technology, including ultra-fast charging capabilities, designed to challenge the convenience of gasoline refueling.
Design and Dimensions
The Great Tang is not a compact vehicle: it measures 5.3 meters in length, nearly two meters wide, and stands at 1.8 meters tall, making it larger than even BYD’s Denza B8. The exterior design is modern, featuring a flowing light bar, a sleek black grille, and vertically integrated headlights. The initial presentation highlights a striking two-tone red and silver color scheme.
The Super e Platform and Blade Battery Technology
However, the Great Tang’s real innovation lies beneath the surface. Built on BYD’s new Super e platform with a second-generation Blade battery, the SUV can charge from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes using BYD’s proprietary 1,500 kW charging stations. This rapid charging speed is enabled by a 1,000-volt electrical architecture, a significant step forward in EV technology.
Why this matters: Charging time has been a major barrier to EV adoption. BYD’s claim of near-gas-tank-level refueling speeds directly addresses this concern, potentially reshaping consumer expectations. The fast-charging technology is not just a feature; it’s a fundamental shift in how electric vehicles can be used.
Performance and Range
BYD will offer the Great Tang in single-motor (402 or 496 hp) and dual-motor (784 hp) configurations. Despite its substantial weight (up to 2,970 kg), the rear-motor version claims a CLTC range of up to 590 miles (950 km). The dual-motor variant delivers slightly less, at approximately 528 miles (850 km).
Interior and Features
The Great Tang’s cabin follows a 2+2+3 seating layout and includes premium amenities. A large central infotainment display dominates the dashboard, complemented by separate screens for the driver and passenger. Other features include wireless phone chargers, a built-in refrigerator, and a ceiling-mounted entertainment screen for rear passengers.
Pricing and Availability
The Great Tang is expected to launch in China with a starting price of around 400,000 yuan (approximately $58,000). BYD has not yet announced plans for international availability.
The Great Tang represents a significant leap forward in EV charging technology, potentially setting a new standard for convenience and usability.
