The Jaecoo 8 SHS-P is entering the SUV market with a bold claim: offering seven seats, an impressive 83-mile electric range, and a price tag starting at £45,000. This new model from the Chinese automaker directly targets competitors like the Skoda Kodiaq and Hyundai Santa Fe, aiming to undercut them on both price and plug-in hybrid capabilities.
Design and Positioning
While not simply a larger version of the Jaecoo 7, the J8 shares some design cues with its sibling, including the distinctive “waterfall” grille and bold Jaecoo lettering. It prioritizes a sleek, modern aesthetic over the more rugged appearance of some competitors. The J8 leverages the same platform as the Chery Tiggo 9 and Omoda 9, indicating a strategic approach to development and cost efficiency.
Performance and Range
The J8 stands out with its “Super Hybrid System,” delivering 422bhp and 580Nm of torque through all-wheel drive. Crucially, its 34.5kWh battery provides an 83-mile pure-electric range—exceeding the Santa Fe and Kodiaq in this regard. This extended EV capability is paired with a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine and a three-speed transmission optimized for hybrid use, enabling a combined range exceeding 700 miles.
The car’s charging capabilities are also competitive, supporting up to 40kW rapid charging, allowing a 30-80% top-up in approximately 20 minutes. Acceleration from 0-62mph takes under six seconds.
Off-Road and Practicality
Jaecoo positions itself as a more rugged brand, and the J8 reflects this with lockable differentials, an adaptive all-terrain system, and a 600mm wading depth—matching the Land Rover Discovery Sport in off-road capability. The interior offers up to 2,021 liters of luggage space.
The J8 comes standard with seven seats, catering to larger families. Higher-spec Executive models offer six seats with captain’s chairs, complete with heating, ventilation, and massage functions. A “Boss Button” allows front passengers to adjust the seat for maximum legroom.
Pricing and Value
At £45,500, the base Luxury model undercuts the Hyundai Santa Fe plug-in hybrid (starting over £53,000) and offers seven seats where the Skoda Kodiaq iV only provides five. The Luxury trim includes dual 12.3-inch displays, wireless smartphone integration, a panoramic sunroof, adaptive suspension, and a 14-speaker Sony sound system. The six-seat Executive model costs £2,000 more and adds Nappa leather upholstery.
The Jaecoo 8’s aggressive pricing and feature set position it as a serious contender in the competitive SUV market, forcing established brands to re-evaluate their offerings.
The arrival of the Jaecoo 8 highlights the growing competition from Chinese automakers, who are increasingly prioritizing electric range, advanced features, and competitive pricing. This shift is likely to reshape consumer expectations and drive innovation across the industry.
