MG has introduced the MGS9, a new seven-seat plug-in hybrid SUV designed to challenge established family vehicles like the Skoda Kodiaq, Peugeot 5008, and Kia Sorento. Priced starting at £34,205, the MGS9 aims to undercut competitors while offering a practical and spacious option for larger families.
Price and Positioning
The MGS9 enters a competitive segment by offering significant price advantages: it’s roughly £5,000 cheaper than the base Kodiaq and nearly £7,000 less than the 5008 (neither of which come standard with PHEV capability). Even against plug-in hybrid rivals like the Jaecoo 8 and Chery Tiggo 9, the MG undercuts them by up to £11,000. This aggressive pricing strategy is a key element of MG’s market approach.
Powertrain and Range
The MGS9 uses the same plug-in hybrid system as the MG HS, combining a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a 24.7kWh battery. This setup delivers up to 63 miles of pure-electric range, sufficient for many daily commutes without gasoline. While other competitors, such as the Skoda Kodiaq iV (75 miles), Jaecoo 8 (83 miles), and Tiggo 9 (91 miles), offer longer electric ranges, the MGS9 remains a viable option for those prioritizing affordability.
Space and Practicality
MG emphasizes that the MGS9 provides genuine seating for seven, unlike some 5+2 configurations. Measuring 4.98 meters long with a 2.92-meter wheelbase, it’s notably larger than the Kodiaq, promising ample space for passengers and cargo. Boot capacity stands at 322 liters with all seats up (more than a Vauxhall Corsa), expanding to over 1,000 liters when the rearmost seats are folded.
Interior Features
The interior design closely mirrors the MG HS, featuring dual 12.3-inch screens for infotainment and the driver’s display. The MGS9 adds physical shortcut buttons and avoids piano-black trim. All models come standard with a panoramic sunroof, tri-zone climate control, and five charging ports. Higher-spec Premium models (from £36,945) include a Bose sound system, powered tailgate, and massaging front seats.
Market Impact
The launch of the MGS9 is a direct response to competitors like the Jaecoo 8, demonstrating MG’s intention to aggressively compete in the seven-seat SUV market. The company’s strategy focuses on providing value by offering a well-equipped vehicle at a lower price point.
MG’s entrance into the seven-seat PHEV segment is set to shake up the market, forcing competitors to re-evaluate their pricing and feature sets. The MGS9’s aggressive positioning could attract buyers who prioritize practicality and affordability.
