Lucid Motors to Expand with Three New SUVs and a Robotaxi

Lucid Motors unveiled ambitious plans today to broaden its vehicle lineup with three new mid-size SUVs, alongside a conceptual two-seat robotaxi called the Lunar. The expansion comes after the launch of the Gravity SUV last year and signals a significant push to reach a wider consumer base.

New Mid-Size Platform: A Foundation for Expansion

Lucid confirmed it will leverage a new mid-size platform to produce at least three distinct SUV models. This move follows initial reports in 2024 about the company’s development of a smaller SUV platform. The platform will also introduce the new “Atlas” drive unit, designed to reduce manufacturing costs through simplified, identical front and rear housings.

SUV Lineup: Earth, Cosmos, and an Off-Road Variant

The first confirmed model is the “Earth,” intended to mirror the Gravity SUV in approach but with more compact dimensions. Alongside it will be the “Cosmos,” described as prioritizing efficiency, space, and performance, and visually distinguished by a lower, sloping roofline. A third SUV is planned, geared toward off-road capabilities, featuring a more upright design. Lucid aims to price these mid-size vehicles starting below $50,000.

Lunar Robotaxi: Lucid’s Autonomous Vision

In addition to the SUVs, Lucid teased the “Lunar,” a fully autonomous, two-seat robotaxi concept. The Lunar, still in early development, showcases a doorless design with no steering wheel or pedals. This appears to be a direct response to Tesla’s Cybercab project.

Collaboration with Uber: Scaling Autonomous Operations

Lucid is finalizing an agreement with Uber to deploy its mid-size vehicles in an autonomous ride-hailing service. The partnership will expand over time, with Lucid aiming to scale the program similarly to its Gravity robotaxi initiative, announced earlier this year at CES.

Lucid’s move to expand into lower-priced SUVs and autonomous ride-hailing demonstrates a strategic shift towards broader market accessibility. The Atlas drive unit and collaboration with Uber suggest a focus on cost reduction and scalability.
