Volkswagen is set to relaunch its popular ID.3 electric hatchback this year under a new name – the ID.3 Neo – with significant design and technological improvements. The move comes as the company prepares a next-generation ID. Golf model, scheduled for release later this decade, and acknowledges substantial updates to the current ID.3 warrant a refreshed identity for 2026.
Comprehensive Redesign and New Features
The ID.3 Neo, revealed in “mid-April,” will feature a comprehensive exterior redesign, addressing early criticism and incorporating customer feedback. Key changes include a smoother front end, redesigned headlights, and a body-colored tailgate – replacing the current contrasting black bootlid.
Inside, Volkswagen is addressing a major point of customer frustration: the removal of touch-sensitive controls in favor of physical buttons on the steering wheel. The update will also introduce a one-pedal driving mode (allowing full deceleration without using the brake), an enhanced Travel Assist system with traffic-light detection, and Vehicle to Load (V2L) technology, enabling drivers to power external devices directly from the car’s battery.
Interior Improvements and Battery Tech
Beyond the exterior and new features, the ID.3 Neo will see improvements to interior quality, with more textured and soft-touch materials. Volkswagen’s development boss, Kai Grünitz, has confirmed that cost reductions and performance enhancements in battery technology will also be implemented, benefiting both the company and consumers.
While specific battery sizes remain consistent with the current lineup (ranging from 52kWh to 79kWh), the update aims to improve range and overall efficiency. The car will retain its rear-drive layout and multi-link rear suspension.
Competition and Pricing
The revised ID.3 will compete directly with other C-segment EVs, including the Cupra Born, Skoda Elroq, Renault Megane, Kia EV3, and Hyundai Ioniq 3. Pricing is expected to remain competitive with the existing model, starting around £31,000.
Why the Name Change?
Volkswagen chose not to apply the “Golf” badge to the ID.3 Neo because of the strong brand equity associated with the ICE-powered Golf hatchback. The ID. Golf name will be reserved for an all-new electric C-segment model coming later in the decade.
The ID.3 Neo represents a significant refresh for Volkswagen’s electric lineup, demonstrating the company’s commitment to improving its EVs based on real-world feedback and emerging technology.
