Honda has officially denied recent reports suggesting it will discontinue production of the Prologue electric SUV in December. The denial comes amid broader industry adjustments as EV sales slow down following the expiration of federal incentives in the United States. EV Market Correction

The denial follows a pattern of automakers scaling back EV plans as demand cools. Just recently, Honda canceled three upcoming electric models, including the Acura RSX, signaling a shift away from aggressive EV expansion. This correction is driven by real-world sales data: through February, Honda sold only 1,731 Prologues, a 74.6% drop year-over-year. The broader market slump coincides with the end of federal EV incentives in September 2025, which triggered an immediate decline in electric vehicle sales.

Shared Platform, Shared Risks

The Prologue is built on General Motors’ Ultium platform, shared with vehicles like the Chevrolet Blazer EV and Cadillac Lyriq. This collaboration was intended to streamline EV development, but it also exposes Honda to the risks associated with GM’s EV strategy. GM, along with Ford and Stellantis, have already reported significant losses on their EV programs. Honda is projecting a nearly $16 billion loss in this sector.

Honda previously ended production of the Acura ZDX, another Ultium-based vehicle, citing “market conditions.” This decision suggests a willingness to cut losses on underperforming EV models.
