BMW to Phase Out i4 as New i3 Takes Center Stage

BMW has announced that production of the i4 electric vehicle will end next year, making way for the newly launched i3 saloon. This decision marks a natural shift in the automaker’s electric lineup, streamlining its offerings and prioritizing newer, more advanced models.

The Rise and Sunset of the i4

Introduced in 2021, the i4 was one of BMW’s initial forays into high-volume electric vehicles alongside the iX. However, with the arrival of the i3 – a vehicle boasting superior technology and similar dimensions – the i4’s position has become redundant. Production will conclude at BMW’s Munich plant, where i3 production is set to begin shortly.

Strategic Model Transition

According to BMW product boss Jochen Goller, this move was always part of the company’s long-term strategy.

“When you look back on the last 20 years, you always had new models coming in and old models phasing out. So I think this is part of the history of our industry.”

The transition is expected to see i4 volumes decrease as i3 production ramps up, a predictable pattern in the automotive lifecycle.

Future Plans: Neue Klasse and the 4 Series

While the i4 won’t be immediately replaced, BMW is already working on a new 4 Series that will serve as a more dynamically focused alternative to the 3 Series. Development head Joachim Post has emphasized the 4 Series’ importance, confirming its integration into BMW’s future Neue Klasse lineup. The company intends to offer each model with a mix of powertrains, including both electric and internal combustion options, ensuring flexibility in its product range.

Diversification of Powertrains

BMW’s future strategy involves offering a unified design across all powertrains. The new 4 Series will mirror the 3 Series in powertrain diversity, with an electric version planned alongside traditional ICE options. This approach ensures BMW remains competitive in a rapidly evolving automotive market.

Ultimately, the phasing out of the i4 is not an end but a calculated step in BMW’s broader electrification strategy. By streamlining its EV offerings and embracing future technologies, the company is positioning itself for sustained growth in the electric vehicle sector.
