BMW will launch the first models under the newly in-house Alpina brand with high-performance versions of the 7 Series sedan and X7 SUV. This move signals BMW’s intention to position Alpina as a distinct luxury tier between its mainstream models and the ultra-exclusive Rolls-Royce lineup.
Alpina’s Role in BMW’s Strategy
The decision to incorporate Alpina directly into BMW’s portfolio reflects a broader shift in the luxury automotive market. Historically, Alpina has occupied a niche between sport-focused M vehicles and the opulent Rolls-Royce range. By bringing the brand under its umbrella, BMW aims to capture a larger share of buyers seeking high-end customization and performance without the outright track-focused approach of the M series.
Initial Models and Timeline
The first Alpina-branded vehicles will debut with the updated 7 Series in the coming months, followed by an all-new X7 in 2027. Joachim Post, BMW’s board member for research and development, confirmed this strategy. While the extent of modifications remains undisclosed, it is expected that Alpina variants will feature unique styling cues, premium materials, and greater personalization options.
Powertrain Flexibility and Market Positioning
BMW has emphasized that the new Alpina models will be “powertrain flexible”, offering both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) options. This adaptability is crucial as the automotive industry transitions toward electrification. Importantly, BMW has clarified that Alpina will not overlap with the BMW M brand. Instead, Alpina will prioritize speed, comfort, and luxury, differentiating itself from M’s race-track oriented performance.
Competition and Future Models
The Alpina models are directly aimed at competitors such as Bentley and Mercedes-Maybach, filling a gap in BMW’s portfolio. The future expansion of the Alpina lineup to include smaller models, like a 3 Series or 5 Series variant, is less certain. BMW’s current focus is on establishing Alpina as a high-end luxury brand first.
“Alpina is always different [to BMW M] in the past. BMW M is for the race track, and Alpina we talk about speed not sport. Speed, comfort, and luxury.” – Joachim Post, BMW Board Member for Research and Development
Whether Alpina can meet its loyal customer base’s expectations remains to be seen. However, the initial move toward high-end luxury models suggests BMW intends to solidify Alpina as a distinct brand within its lineup.
