Huawei-Backed Aito M6 Launches with Standard LiDAR, Priced Above Competitors

15

Huawei’s automotive partner, HIMA (under the Aito brand), has begun taking pre-orders for its new Aito M6 model. The standout feature across all variants is the inclusion of Huawei’s advanced 896-line LiDAR sensor as standard equipment. This positions the M6 as a tech-forward competitor in the crowded EV and extended-range EV (EREV) market.

Pricing and Powertrain Options

The Aito M6 EREV (extended-range electric vehicle) starts at 269,800 yuan ($39,100 USD), while the full electric vehicle (EV) model begins at 289,800 yuan ($42,000 USD). This represents a premium over comparable models, with the EV version costing approximately $3,000 more than the EREV due to battery and performance differences.

Buyers can choose between two primary powertrain configurations:

  • EREV: A 1.5T engine paired with dual electric motors (165kW and 180kW) and either a 37kWh or 53kWh battery pack, delivering a WLTC range of up to 272km.
  • EV: Available in rear-wheel drive (RWD, 227kW) or all-wheel drive (AWD, 340kW) with a 100kWh battery offering a CLTC range of up to 760km.

Exterior and Interior Design

The Aito M6 breaks from the brand’s larger models (M7, M8, M9) with a distinct exterior. Highlights include “star-studded” headlights, aerodynamically optimized air ducts, and a rear design featuring solid-state LiDAR and distinctive taillights.

Inside, the M6 offers a unique “Purple Mist White” two-tone color scheme. The cabin is equipped with a full LCD instrument cluster, a head-up display (HUD), a rotatable 4D central screen, and a passenger-side “Inspiration Window.” Additional amenities include wireless charging, dual cup holders, and a hollowed-out center console with hidden hooks for storage.

Dimensions and Configurations

The Aito M6 measures 4960mm in length, 1985mm in width, and 1736mm in height, with a 2950mm wheelbase. Wheel options include 20-inch (255/50 tires) and 21-inch (265/45 tires) variants.

The inclusion of LiDAR as standard on all trims suggests HIMA is pushing for early adoption of autonomous driving features, betting that the technology will become increasingly essential for consumers.

The Aito M6 launch reinforces the trend of Chinese EV manufacturers rapidly incorporating advanced technology into their vehicles. The higher pricing of the EV variant highlights the ongoing cost challenge for fully electric models, as battery technology and material costs remain significant factors.
