Geely Accelerates Global Vehicle Development with Unified European R&D

14

Geely Auto has consolidated its European research and development operations under a new entity, Geely Technology Europe, to dramatically shorten the time it takes to launch new vehicle models worldwide. The move aims to reduce the gap between Chinese and international releases to less than six months, signaling a major shift in the automaker’s global strategy.

Streamlining Global Development

The new R&D hub, announced on March 26, 2026, combines Geely’s engineering teams in Sweden and Germany. This follows a decade of European presence, beginning with a 2013 partnership with Volvo that established a key R&D center in Gothenburg, Sweden. The goal is to design vehicle platforms from the outset for global markets, working closely with Geely’s Chinese Research Institute.

This isn’t just about speed; it’s about efficiency. Traditionally, automakers adapted vehicles after initial launches, leading to delays and extra costs. Geely’s unified approach eliminates this friction by ensuring models are ready for all regions simultaneously.

Europe as a Benchmark

According to Giovanni Lanfranchi, CEO of Geely Technology Europe, the region isn’t just a key market but a benchmark for automotive excellence.

“Establishing Geely Technology Europe creates a genuinely borderless R&D setup…a strategic edge that allows us to not only meet global standards, but help set them.”

This highlights a broader trend: Chinese automakers increasingly view Europe not just as a sales destination, but as a source of expertise in vehicle architecture, software, and regulatory compliance – areas where European standards are often the most stringent.

Regulatory Breakthroughs and Expansion

Geely recently secured UN R171 certification for its advanced driver assistance system (G-ASD) on March 13, clearing the path for vehicles with this tech to operate in the EU. This follows the opening of the world’s largest automotive safety testing facility in Hangzhou Bay, China, in December 2025. This facility leverages Volvo’s expertise, demonstrating how Geely integrates European knowledge into its global operations.

By 2027, Geely plans to double European-led vehicle projects, focusing on three key areas:
– global vehicle architectures,
– market-specific product tweaks,
– and AI-powered digital features like advanced driver assistance systems and smart cockpits.

The bottom line: Geely is aggressively unifying its global R&D to accelerate vehicle development and reduce launch times, positioning Europe as a critical center for innovation and regulatory compliance in its quest to become a leading international automaker.
