MG 4 EV Urban: New Entry-Level Electric Hatch Priced From $31,990

MG has officially detailed the specifications and pricing for its new compact electric vehicle, the MG 4 EV Urban, which will hit Australian showrooms in April. The base model starts at $31,990 drive-away, positioning it as one of the most affordable EVs on the market.

Key Specifications and Trims

The MG 4 EV Urban is offered in two variants: one equipped with a 43kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and the other with a larger 54kWh pack. Both come in the top-tier “Essence” trim level, suggesting MG may introduce lower-spec models later.

The vehicle exclusively uses a single-motor, front-wheel-drive configuration – a departure from the rear- or all-wheel-drive options available on the standard MG 4. It measures 4395mm in length, making it slightly larger than its predecessor, with a wheelbase extended by 45mm.

Pricing and Competitors

The MG 4 EV Urban undercuts competitors such as the GWM Ora ($33,990) and the GAC Aion UT (currently at $30,990 drive-away). It also competes with the BYD Dolphin, which starts at $29,990 before on-road costs. Pricing for the Essence 54 variant has not yet been announced.

Performance and Charging

Both versions feature one-pedal driving, a heat pump for efficient climate control, and battery pre-conditioning. They also include vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, allowing users to power external devices. Charging times are estimated at 28 minutes for the 43kWh battery and 30 minutes for the 54kWh battery from 10% to 80%.

Features and Equipment

The Essence trim comes standard with a comprehensive suite of features, including:

  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • Automatic LED headlights with high-beam assist
  • 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Wireless phone charging
  • Heated front seats
  • A suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS)

The ADAS suite includes adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Safety Rating and Warranty

The MG 4 EV Urban has not yet been rated by ANCAP, but it received a five-star rating from Euro NCAP in 2025. MG provides a 10-year/250,000km warranty with dealer servicing or a seven-year/unlimited-km warranty without. The battery is covered for seven years or 150,000km.

Platform and Suspension

The new model rides on MG’s E3 platform, featuring a torsion-beam rear suspension – a downgrade from the multi-link setup in the existing MG 4. MG will continue to sell an updated version of the original MG 4, which will drop the 51kWh and 77kWh batteries in favor of a single 64kWh option.

The MG 4 EV Urban represents a significant move by MG to offer a more accessible electric vehicle option, targeting budget-conscious buyers without compromising on essential features or safety. The new model’s competitive pricing and feature set are expected to disrupt the rapidly growing EV market.
