Lexus is shifting its focus from traditional luxury to creative expression, unveiling two distinct one-off vehicles that merge high-end automotive design with fine art and music. By partnering with a visual artist and a contemporary musician, the automaker is attempting to transform its vehicles into moving canvases, moving beyond mere transportation to become cultural statements.
The Sketchbook Aesthetic: The Lexus IS 350 x Alex Alpert
At EXPO Chicago, Lexus introduced a highly stylized IS 350 created in collaboration with artist Alex Alpert. The vehicle features a striking “line-art” aesthetic that makes the sedan appear as though it were a hand-drawn sketch brought to life.
The design utilizes bold black lines to accentuate the aerodynamic contours of the car, giving it a graphic, comic-book-inspired appearance. Key details of this specific build include:
- F Sport Trim: The model features black wheels, matching mirror caps, and dark window trim to complement the high-contrast art style.
- Performance Specs: Under the hood sits a familiar 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 311 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, capable of reaching 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds.
- Expanding the Series: This is not just a single car; Alpert will also be painting custom IS 350 hoods at major design events like NYCxDesign and Art Basel. These pieces will incorporate motifs representing Japanese heritage, precision engineering, and the brand’s philosophy of hospitality (Omotenashi ).
A Musical Tribute: The RZ “Blue In Green”
While the IS 350 focuses on visual geometry, the second one-off project—an electric RZ crossover —is a sensory tribute to jazz legend Miles Davis. Created in collaboration with musician Laufey, the project commemorates what would have been Davis’ 100th birthday.
The vehicle is inspired by Laufey’s reimagining of the iconic jazz composition, “Blue In Green.” Every design choice serves as a nod to the musical heritage:
- Chameleon Paint: The exterior features a specialized finish that shifts from deep blue to green depending on the angle of the light.
- Instrumental Details: The car features brass-colored brake calipers, a subtle reference to Davis’ trumpet, and a custom illuminated “L” badge.
- Immersive Interior: The cabin utilizes a red and black color palette, featuring lyrics inscribed in the cargo area. Even the digital experience is tuned to the theme, with a unique startup sequence that plays the opening notes of the jazz classic.
Why This Matters: Moving Toward “Lifestyle” Branding
This move by Lexus reflects a broader trend in the luxury automotive industry: the shift from selling mechanical specifications to selling lifestyle and identity. As electric vehicles (EVs) like the RZ become more standardized in their performance, automakers are looking for new ways to differentiate themselves.
By integrating fine art and music, Lexus is positioning its brand as a patron of the arts, aiming to capture the attention of a demographic that values cultural relevance as much as horsepower.
Through these collaborations, Lexus is proving that a car can be more than a machine—it can be a medium for storytelling and artistic expression.
