Suzuki will launch its first electric vehicle (EV), the e-Vitara, in Australia by June 2026. The new model is positioned to compete with popular EVs like the Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia EV3, and BYD Atto 3. The e-Vitara represents a significant shift for Suzuki, a brand traditionally known for fuel efficiency rather than battery power.
Two Models, Two Powertrains
The e-Vitara will be available in two trim levels: the front-wheel drive Motion and the all-wheel drive Ultra. Suzuki Queensland will also offer an additional powertrain option for the Ultra, expanding choices for buyers. Both models share the same dimensions – 4.275 meters long, 1.8 meters wide, and 1.635 meters tall, riding on a 2.7-meter wheelbase.
Performance and Range
The base Motion variant features a single 106kW motor paired with a 49kWh battery, delivering a claimed WLTP range of 344km. The Ultra model boosts power with dual motors (135kW) and a larger 61kWh battery, offering a range of up to 395km. A unique front-wheel drive version of the Ultra, available through Suzuki Queensland, maximizes range to 426km using the 61kWh battery with the lower-power motor. DC fast charging allows both models to replenish from 10% to 80% in approximately 45 minutes.
Features and Equipment
The entry-level Motion trim includes standard features like 18-inch alloy wheels, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and fabric upholstery. The upgraded Ultra model adds LED fog lights, a panoramic glass roof, premium fabric/leather upholstery, power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, wireless charging, and an Infinity sound system.
Safety Standards
All e-Vitara models will come equipped with advanced safety features, including adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and a surround-view camera. The vehicle has received a four-star safety rating from Euro NCAP; an ANCAP rating for the Australian market is pending.
Market Context
Suzuki’s entry into the EV market is timed strategically. Demand for EVs in Australia is growing, but affordable options remain limited. The e-Vitara’s expected pricing – based on the UK market where it starts at around $50,424 AUD – positions it competitively against established rivals. The shared platform with Toyota underscores the increasing collaboration between automakers to reduce development costs and accelerate EV adoption.
“The e-Vitara marks a defining moment for Suzuki… a clear signal of how we’re evolving as a brand, whilst remaining true to the values that have always defined Suzuki.” – Michael Pachota, Suzuki Australia general manager.
The launch of the e-Vitara will be closely watched as it signals Suzuki’s commitment to electric mobility.
