Hyundai to Expand EV Lineup with the Compact Ioniq 3

13

Hyundai has confirmed that the Ioniq 3, a new small electric hatchback, is slated for an Australian release in early 2027. This move marks a strategic expansion of the brand’s electric vehicle (EV) portfolio, aiming to capture a larger share of the increasingly competitive compact car market.

Filling the Market Gap

The introduction of the Ioniq 3 is part of a broader push by Hyundai Motor Company Australia to achieve near-total market coverage. According to David Rodda, Sales Director at Hyundai Australia, the brand currently covers 85% of the EV market. With the upcoming Staria Commercial Van and the Ioniq 3, Hyundai expects to reach 96% market coverage.

By entering the “B-segment”—the category for light cars like the Toyota Yaris—Hyundai is positioning the Ioniq 3 to compete directly with established players such as the MG 4. This segment is critical for manufacturers looking to attract younger drivers and urban commuters who prioritize maneuverability and efficiency over sheer size.

Design and Specifications: From Concept to Reality

The production model is based on the “Concept Three” showcased at the Munich Motor Show last September. While the concept was a stylized vision, the production version is taking shape through spy shots and official design cues:

  • Dimensions & Platform: The vehicle is expected to be slightly shorter and lower than a standard i30 Hatch but will feature a wider stance and a longer wheelbase (approximately 2722mm). It is anticipated to utilize a 400V version of the E-GMP platform, shared with the upcoming Kia EV4.
  • Exterior Aesthetics: Following the “Art of Steel” design language, the Ioniq 3 will feature a coupe-like silhouette with sharp, prominent haunches. It will retain the signature Parametric Pixel lighting elements that define the Ioniq sub-brand.
  • Interior Layout: Moving away from the concept’s ultra-minimalism, the production interior will feature more practical, free-standing screens. A large horizontal infotainment display will be complemented by physical knobs and switches for climate control—a design choice that prioritizes driver usability.

Strategic Roadmap

The Ioniq 3 is not an isolated project but a single piece of a massive global electrification strategy. Hyundai has outlined an ambitious roadmap:
1. 2027 Goal: Electrify every model in their European lineup.
2. 2030 Goal: Release 21 different global EV models.

For Australian consumers, the Ioniq 3 will provide a versatile option that sits below the Ioniq 6 sedan and alongside existing electric SUVs like the Kona Electric and the Inster.

Key Dates to Watch

  • April 20, 2026: Global reveal of the Ioniq 3.
  • Early 2027: Expected launch in the Australian market.

The Ioniq 3 represents Hyundai’s pivot toward making electric mobility accessible to the mass market by targeting the high-volume compact hatchback segment.

The Ioniq 3 will serve as a vital link in Hyundai’s growing EV ecosystem, offering a stylish, compact alternative for drivers looking to transition to electric power without moving into a larger SUV.
