China’s new EV battery health standard explained: Why it matters for Australian buyers

China just tightened the rules on how electric vehicle manufacturers talk about battery life. The move isn’t a law. It’s a mandatory industry standard, and it targets the murky gray area between marketing hype and reality.

If you buy an EV today, you’re betting on chemistry that degrades. But how much? Until now, the answer was often “it depends on who you ask.” The new guidelines, developed jointly by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Standardisation Administration of China, aim to kill the guesswork.

What exactly is the “State of Certified Energy”?

Here is the core of the shift: a new metric called the State of Certified Energy (SOCE).

It is distinct from the State of Charge (SOC), which just tells you how full the tank is. SOCE measures the actual health of the battery pack over time. Think of it as a longevity score.

The rule is strict. The displayed SOCE must be within 5% of the battery’s actual remaining capacity. That’s not a suggestion. It’s a requirement. If the system says the battery is at 90% health, it has to be.

There is also a rule for energy used while the car is stationary. Air conditioning, infotainment, idle electronics—the lot. Manufacturers must convert this auxiliary energy use into a “virtual mileage” figure. This display must be accurate to within 3%.

Why? Because draining the battery while parked kills range. Buyers deserve to see that drain, not hide it behind a vague gauge.

The 82% retention benchmark

Let’s get concrete. How long does a battery last? The new standard sets a hard floor for longevity.

A high-voltage battery in a passenger vehicle must retain at least 82% of its initial capacity after:

  • 100,000 kilometers of driving, OR
  • Five years of use

Whichever comes first.

This is huge for the used car market. Right now, a used EV buyer is taking a leap of faith. They trust the previous owner. They hope the warranty covers it. Under this new standard, there is a verifiable data point. Battery health claims will anchor to these concrete milestones. If a car hits the 100k km mark and shows 75% health, something is wrong. Period.

Does this affect Australian EV buyers?

You might think this only impacts China. It doesn’t. The supply chain for electric vehicles is global, and Chinese battery tech is everywhere.

Look at the numbers. In June 2026, Chinese-made vehicles accounted for 39.6% of new car sales in Australia. That is up from 23.5% just a year prior. The Tesla Model Y topped sales in May and June. The Model Y is built by BYD in China.

So, when you buy a BYD, a Tesla, or even a Toyota using Chinese cells, the battery follows its manufacturing origin. If that origin is bound by strict health disclosure standards, the data integrity travels with the pack.

This matters because Australia has battery safety laws, but no specific battery health disclosure rules for EVs or hybrids. We have rules to keep batteries from catching fire. We do not have rules ensuring buyers know how much range they’ve actually lost over time.

Charging speed vs. battery life

A major anxiety for new EV buyers is fast charging. Does blasting 150kW damage the pack faster?

The standard is designed to reassure buyers here too. It forces manufacturers to prove their ultra-fast charging tech doesn’t artificially degrade the battery beyond normal aging curves.

Take BYD’s Denza brand. They are rolling out “Flash Charging” technology in Australia this year. The Denza Z9 GT features the new ‘Blade 2’ battery. It can accept up to 1500 kW of direct current charging. That’s insane power.

Denza claims you can add 800 kilometers of range in nine minutes. But claims are cheap. The new SOCE standard requires the degradation from those rapid sessions to be real, not theoretical. If the battery health drops disproportionately after fast charging sessions, the data will show it.

BYD plans to install this high-power infrastructure at Australian dealerships. Soon, more BYD models will follow. The standard ensures that when you plug in for five minutes, you aren’t silently buying battery wear.

A global ripple effect

This isn’t just about China. It’s about setting the global precedent.

Battery fires are being addressed separately. A mandatory “no fire, no explosion” safety standard is already in the pipeline, effective July 1, 2027. But health retention? That’s about value. It’s about trust.

By setting clear expectations, China is raising the bar. Buyers in Australia will start demanding the same transparency. If a used EV seller can’t provide a SOCE-compliant health report, why should you trust the price?

The standard helps warranty claims, too. It creates a baseline for what “expected battery health” actually looks like at 50,000 km versus 100,000 km. No more arguing over vague wear and tear.

The bottom line

This standard isn’t a regulation. It’s an industry measure. But in a market dominated by a handful of players with Chinese supply chains, industry measures often become de facto laws.

We are seeing a shift. The focus is moving from just “does it work?” to “how well does it age?” For the Australian market, where imported EVs dominate sales growth, this is a warning shot. We are importing not just cars, but new expectations.

The Tesla Model Y is already the best-selling vehicle in Australia. It uses Chinese-made batteries. As more brands follow, the pressure for accurate, certified battery health data will grow. We won’t just want a car that drives far. We want one that proves it will drive far tomorrow.

Will Australian regulators follow suit with their own mandatory health disclosure rules? It seems inevitable. The data is already out there. The question is, will we let the industry hide it any longer?
