This is not a hypothetical scenario. It is a collision waiting to happen.
When a coupler disconnects, gravity and momentum take over. The tongue drops. The trailer pivots. Without a secondary connection, that trailer spins out of control. It becomes a hazard for everyone else on the road.
Hitch safety chains are the only thing standing between a minor fender-bender and a multi-car pileup. They are not optional accessories. They are a mandatory layer of defense. Federal regulations and state laws require them for a reason. They keep the trailer tethered to the tow vehicle if the primary hitch fails.
The Legal Requirement and Primary Function
You might think you are being cautious by skipping them. You are not. You are breaking the law.

Sufficient Slack
Don’t tighten them like guitar strings. You need slack.

The Crisscross Method for Maximum Safety
Installation is straightforward if you follow the rules. Route two chains in a crisscross pattern under the trailer tongue. Connect them to the bumper or receiver on your towing vehicle. The attachment devices at the ends must be sturdy. If the chains are too long, twist them to shorten the effective length. Use wire at the hook points to prevent accidental disengagement.
Crucially, attach the chains to the towing vehicle itself, not to another part of the trailer hitch.
This ensures the trailer stays connected to the truck if the coupler separates from the receiver. Crossing the chains forms a net. That net catches the trailer tongue if it breaks loose and drops onto the roadway.
Slack and Clearance
The chains must be short enough to prevent the trailer from drifting widely. Yet they need enough slack for the towing vehicle to turn without binding. Never let them drag on the ground.
