Mercedes-Benz has officially revealed the 2027 EQS, signaling a significant technological evolution for its flagship electric sedan. While the vehicle maintains its recognizable silhouette, the updates beneath the surface represent a fundamental shift in how the car performs, charges, and delivers range.

A New Technological Foundation

The most critical upgrade for the 2027 model is the transition to a new electric architecture. By moving from a 400-volt system to 800-volt technology, Mercedes-Benz is addressing one of the primary hurdles in EV adoption: charging speed. Higher voltage allows for much faster energy transfer, significantly reducing the time drivers spend at charging stations.

To support this new platform, Mercedes has overhauled more than 25% of the vehicle’s components. Key mechanical improvements include:
Enhanced Battery Capacity: The battery has grown from 118 kWh to 122 kWh.
Advanced Powertrain: The introduction of new, in-house-developed electric motors and a unique two-speed rear-axle transmission designed to optimize efficiency and performance.

Range Expectations: Europe vs. the U.S.

While Mercedes-Benz claims the entry-level EQS 450+ can achieve a staggering 575 miles on a single charge, it is important to note that this figure is based on the WLTP cycle used in Europe.

The WLTP is generally more optimistic than the testing standards used in the United States. Consequently, American buyers should anticipate a real-world range closer to 400 miles, which represents a modest improvement over the current model’s 390-mile rating.

Refined Aesthetics and High-Tech Interior

Visually, the 2027 EQS receives subtle but impactful updates to its exterior:
Front-End Design: A new “powerdome” hood and refined lighting elements provide a sharper look.
Grille Options: The standard model features a black grille with a backlit star pattern and chrome slats. Those opting for the AMG Line will receive a more aggressive, illuminated central star without the chrome accents.

Inside, the cabin remains a bastion of luxury and digital integration. The massive MBUX Hyperscreen remains a centerpiece, and the brand continues to push boundaries with high-tech options like steer-by-wire technology—which includes a modern yoke-style steering wheel—and even heated seatbelts for enhanced passenger comfort.

Market Positioning and Availability

The 2027 EQS lineup will consist of three primary models: the EQS 450+, the EQS 500 4Matic (expected to replace the current 450+ 4Matic), and the range-topping EQS 580 4Matic.

While official pricing for the 2027 models has not yet been finalized, a price increase is expected compared to the 2026 models, which currently start at approximately $101,250.
