Bad alignment doesn’t just annoy your suspension. It eats your tires.
You might not see the damage immediately. The tread wears down unevenly across the surface. The edges tear. The life span shortens. You replace them sooner. The cost adds up fast.
But money isn’t the real issue. Traction is.
Why Bad Alignment Kills Traction
When tires aren’t aligned, they don’t grip the road correctly.
Poor tread contact means poor stopping power.
This happens in every condition. Dry pavement? You slide. Wet roads? You hydroplane. Mud or snow? You are essentially playing Russian roulette with your vehicle’s stability.
Misalignment also hurts handling. Your car won’t track straight. It will drift or pull to one side. This makes steering unpredictable.
The UTQG Ratings You Are Ignoring
Your tires have ratings. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) uses the Uniform Tire Quality Grading (UTQG) system.
These ratings tell you three things:
– Tread wear
– Traction
– Temperature resistance
Manufacturers also list width, aspect ratio, construction type, and rim diameter.
All of this data assumes your tires are properly aligned.
If your wheels are off, those ratings mean nothing.
You won’t know how much heat the tires can handle. You won’t know your load capacity. You are driving blind.
When to Check Your Alignment
Watch your tires.
If they look rough or torn, get them checked. Don’t wait.
Bring your car in for regular maintenance. Ask for a wheel alignment check then.
The cost of alignment is low. Replacing four tires is high.
Fix the alignment. Save the rubber. Stay safe.
